The habitual use of drugs to alter one’s mood, emotions, or state of consciousness in spite of negative effects on relationships, work or personal life represents substance abuse. Dependency can be physical, psychological, or both. Psychological side effects of continued abuse can include loss of sense of self, guilt, isolation and chronic depression.
